The artists interpretation of the balance between the physical and spiritual world of the Ngahere (Forest). The forest and the water are bound together: each links the other, each sustains the life of the land. So the Kaka and the Taniwha keep a quiet balance; one watching from the canopy, the other from beneath the surface of the world.
Neither creature rules over the other, they simply hold the line between the two realms.
Together they are kaitiaki, protectors of the delicate unity between land and water, forest and stream, each guiding the well-being of the other in the ancient ways of the natural world.
