Collection: Jo Midgley
Jo Midgley is a self taught artist who paints predominately in oil. Her preferred subject is wildlife in their natural element and environment. Living on a farm is where she draws inspiration from.
Jo employs an old-fashioned layering technique, building colour and texture gradually to give her scenes of a near three-dimensional quality. She layers oil paint using brush and palette knife to create depth with sparkles of luminous light that shimmer through foliage, especially striking around birds. This shimmering illumination has become her hallmark style.
What sets Jo Midgley apart, is the way she captures movement and light, bringing a tactile, almost magical realism to everyday natural wildlife scenes. Whether it’s a fantail flitting through dappled light, or the warm glow behind manuka blossoms, her pieces invite viewers into moments of serene wonder.
Her paintings are in private collections in New Zealand and overseas.
Some interesting facts about Jo: “I am also a qualified chef, and before covid I was working 3 nights a week in a luxury trout fishing lodge. I enjoy skiing, horse riding and having a glass of pinot noir at the end of the day”.
